In July, we will be going to Sendafa, Ethiopia to once again be part of a medical/surgical mission team to provide medical care to the people of Sendafa and the surrounding communities.  This will be the 6^th yearly medical camp that we and others from Living Word have participated in.  We join Dr. Frew, an Ethiopian family physician and several other Ethiopian physicians and nurses, at the Sendafa Health Center. 

We have truly been blessed by the opportunity to serve the people there.  The first time we went, we were told by Dr. Frew that probably 95% of the people we were seeing had never been seen by a physician before in their life.    Even though Sendafa is only 35 kilometers from Addis Ababa, the capital city, the access to medical care is very poor.  Although there is the government run clinic in the village, it was staffed by community health workers but no physicians.  During the first medical camp, we were overwhelmed with the number of patients that arrived to be seen.  There were so many patients that we had to get the local police to help out with crowd control.  During subsequent trips, Dr. Frew has given out passes in advance to patients in order to make the numbers more manageable.  There are urgent situations that arise and add to the numbers.   We are extremely busy seeing needy patients with the full spectrum diseases- both common and uncommon illnesses.   We are often challenged, especially with some of the tropical diseases we encounter and treat. 

With our subsequent trips, we have been pleased to have some patients return with favorable stories of how much better they felt after we treated them in previous years.  Our eye surgeons and doctors have literally made blind people see as they have performed many cataract operations and other eye care.  That has been amazing to see and witness.  Dr. Dan Henriksen has been our general surgeon and has provided some awesome outcomes from the surgical standpoint.  Last year, we had a dentist join the team.  We have been blessed to work with American and Ethiopian doctors and nurses who truly show the love and compassion of Christ in their interactions and care of the patients being treated.  We are constantly recruiting for doctors and nurses to help out on future trips.

HIV/AIDS is quite prevalent in Ethiopia.  With the support and resources from LWCC, Dr. Frew, who our church has employed full time to coordinate our multidisciplinary effort in Sendafa, has developed a caring ministry to those suffering with this disease.  Whereas when we started in 2006, about 6 persons in Sendafa were identified with HIV/AIDS, Dr. Frew now cares for over 300 of those who have the disease.  The Lord has blessed many with successful treatment.  Dr. Frew, the medical teams, and the nonmedical team members who make home visits to some of these patients have together showed the community that compassionate care can really make a difference in the lives of these patients.  Hope for life has been restored to many, in a Christ honoring way.

We feel very privileged and blessed to be some small part of what Living Word and the Lord are doing in Sendafa.  We hope and pray that the patients we treat there can sense something special in our interactions with them, that Gods healing power is effective in their lives, that they may leave the clinic feeling better physically and mentally, and that they feel Christ’s presence in their life.  And as a result of all this, to Him be the Glory.

CAUSES OF BLINDNESS
Diabetes related eye diseases are major causes of blindness in South Pacific Islands. There is an explosion of type II diabetes amongst polynesians. In American Samoa, prevelance rate for diabetes is 25-30%.

Respective Governments, NGOs and funding agencies are not prepared to combat against these problems. Resources are scare/limited due to the remoteness of their locations and blinding situations are getting worse.
